I had to post a video cause i’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be able to express this in a gif.
Did you guys ever notice the unbelievable sigh he lets out after she says yes? It’s like he’s letting go of 8 years of heartache, (sexual) tension, confusion, hurt, guilt, worry, etc…in one breath.
I just really love that small detail. So insignificant, but so important at the same time.
guuhh YES I LOVE THAT SIGH. It’s like he’s releasing this breath he never even knew he’d been holding for all those years. He’s finally letting go of his self-denial, finally releasing his guilt, finally freeing himself of his demons, and finally accepting that he is worthy of true happiness, happiness that he could only ever find with Mary. I think that sigh was also filled with pure relief that Mary still wanted him after everything. I don’t think Matthew ever took for granted that Mary would say yes to his proposal the second time around. Hence his gentleness with her during the entire scene. Posing the question initially as an honest request to simply stay. And still not finding the courage to say those exact words clearly until Mary asked him to, and he finally knew she had accepted him.
